Nebraska Licensure

Anyone practicing medicine and surgery in the State of Nebraska and not specifically falling under the exception described in Neb. Rev. Stat. §38-2025 must be licensed in Nebraska as either a physician or as an osteopathic physician and surgeon.

License Types

• Physician & Surgeon: individual who has earned the degree of M.D. (Doctor of Medicine). They are qualified in the diagnosis or treatment of diseases, ailments, pain, deformity, or any physical or mental condition or injury of human beings.
• Osteopathic Physician & Surgeon: individual who has earned the degree of D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine). They are qualified in the diagnosis or treatment of diseases, ailments, pain, deformity, or any physical or mental condition or injury of human beings.
• Compact Physician: Individual who holds a full, unrestricted medical license in a compact member state and wishes to practice in multiple states. Voluntary, expedited pathway to licensure for physicians who qualify.
• Physician Temporary Visiting Faculty Permit: Individual who is serving as a member of the faculty of an accredited hospital, school or college of medicine in Nebraska.
• Temporary Educational Permit: Permits an individual to practice medicine and surgery, osteopathic medicine and surgery, or any of their allied specialties in a supervised educational program approved by the Nebraska Board of Medicine and Surgery.

License Renewal

The Nebraska Board of Medicine and Surgery requires the following minimum requirements to renew your medical license. Licenses expire October 1 of every even year regardless of when your license was issued.

CME Requirements

On or before the credential expiration date, individuals licensed to practice medicine and surgery and osteopathic medicine and surgery must earn one of the following:

• 50.0 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 credits
  • Approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA);
  • 1 year of participation in an approved graduate medical education program is approved as 50 hours of Category 1 continuing education; and
  • Hours are to be earned within the 24 months immediately preceding the date of expiration, except that a licensee who has earned more than the 50 hours required for license renewal for a 24-month renewal period is allowed to carry over up to 25 hours to the next 24-month renewal period; or
  • 3.0 hours of the 50.0 hours are required to be on the subject of opioids. 0.5 hours of the 3.0 hours are to be on the PDMP (Prescription Drug Monitoring Program).
